Evolution of
Aluminum Furniture
Those of my generation will remember the fly-away tubular
aluminum loungers from the 1960's. Well, even today this is
great for poolside.
However, now it's the 21st century and our patios have
become more attractive and elegant. So aluminum has also
evolved to become an attractive and viable alternative in patio
furniture that should be seriously considered.
The construction method that changed everything is the
casting process. Now, aluminum furniture is made by using a
mold in which molten aluminum is poured. The result is a solid
form. This method allows a wide range of design possibilities
that furniture designers have taken advantage of and are now
using to create designs even suitable for those with very
selective tastes.
Looking for quality can insure you purchase a better piece
of furniture. Look at the joints. The joints should have
full-circumference welds, not just bolted in the manner of
beach furniture. Look at the finish. Good quality aluminum
furniture will have a power-coated finish in which colored
polyester powders are applied and then baked onto the frame.
The finished product will have an elegant look to it.
Vinyl webbing and straps can be used on fine-quality
aluminum furniture. With the use of color and texture, the look
can be quite striking. Look for vinyl that was has been
constructed with mildew inhibitors and ultra-violet
stabilizers.
Look at the wood trim and handles. Wood on better aluminum
furniture will be finished in a manner that adds to the
appearance of the whole unit and to avoid the need to provide
separate periodic maintenance to the wood. Otherwise, the wood
may need to be removed from the furniture piece for
maintenance.
Care &
Cleaning
Aluminum furniture is naturally weather-resistant, including
UV rays and mold. However, aluminum does require periodic
cleaning to prevent suntan oils, human perspiration and
environmental pollutants from baking into or corroding the
finish.
To clean aluminum furniture, a solution of warm water and
mild detergent is recommended. A non-abrasive soft brush can be
used so the painted surface is not scratched or marked. Finish
with a good clean water rinse. If the furniture has a gloss
finish, apply a fine non-compound car wax. Do not use alkaline
products such as ammonia (window cleaner) on outdoor
furniture.
It is also important to clean aluminum furniture as soon as
possible after a spill, to prevent staining.
