Wrought Iron
Furniture & Its Care
Wrought iron furniture use to mean large heavy pieces of
garden furniture that no one ever moved. However, now wrought
iron furniture is designed to be a welcomed addition to garden
decor.
Wrought iron is forged iron; a handmade process in which
iron is heated, then hammered into a shape predetermined by the
"smithy." Various pieces of iron may then be welded or bolted
together to make one complete piece of wrought iron patio
furniture.
Care & Cleaning
Although wrought iron resists corrosion better than modern
steel, iron will rust in seaside and other wet climates. That
is why wrought iron furniture is often available with
protective weather-resistant coatings and finishes.
To protect the coating by washing outdoor wrought iron
furniture periodically with a mild soap in warm water. Rinse
with clear water, then completely dry it.
It's not a bad idea to wax smooth finishes and to oil
textured finishes. If your furniture has springs or moving
parts, oil once a year.
If rust appears, lightly sand the area. Then apply thin
coats of the coating originally used on your furniture or a
metal paint. If using a spray paint, apply in short light
stokes.
Nevertheless, wrought iron furniture should be stored away
in a dry place during rainy and snowy weather. Wrought iron
without a protective finish will require very active
maintenance. Look for and follow care instructions that come
with your new furniture.
